yarn along - the book thief

When every blog I read this week is gushing about all the signs of spring, I can feel pretty confident that it is at least almost here. And I am so, so, so excited.

Last spring I wrote a post on purple and yellow. I remember this particularly, because it felt like all of the spring flowers were blooming in those colors. And it looks like I've come full circle. As the bulbs are just beginning to push their little faces through the dirt and snow, I am again thinking in purple and yellow.

And in fact, this color combination was always a favorite when I was little...anyone else?

I'm pretty happy with my new little case, and ecstatic to have finished a project with the tapestry technique.  I have a litany of critiques...the fit it very tight at the bottom, it's a little too crafty-looking, you can see the wrong colors poking through...blah, blah, blah...

I promised myself recently to focus more on the creative process in all my crafty and culinary undertakings, not so much the success of the product. After all, the process is the part where we're growing, and it is the growth that contributes to our happiness, not the thing itself.

And peeking out from my new case is my latest read, The Book Thief. I had to get the e-book version from my library, and I am not a convert. I realize that an iPhone is not the ideal tool for reading, but I still miss my pages.

But it hasn't kept me from enjoying this amazing read. Narrated by Death, so far it has been a beautiful and poetic story of lives affected by the Holocaust. It is truly sad and sweet and linguistically enchanting. And remembering how many people were touched by the long fingers of tyranny and war reminds me to appreciate the sunshine and freedom I am blessed with.

Linking up with Ginny. Happy Wednesday, friends.

  1. Oh, the Book Thief is on my reading list! I'm glad you like it...I've heard nothing but really good things about it! Your iPhone case is the. best. Let yourself be happy with the process AND the thing itself. It's beautiful!

  2. Hello Clair,
The case looks pretty to me. I totally agree with you, the creative process to me is more important (totally absorbed in it and forget time) but it is very nice if the end result is satisfactory.

  6. I have been wanting to read that book for years and I hear they are making it into a movie. So I want to read it before that happens!

  7. Oh, this reminded me of my favorite childhood colors: purple and turquoise. My skis, bike, tennis racquet (I was a way more active child than adult) and just about every outfit combo created had to be purple and turquoise. Ah, youth.

I love this iPhone pattern - I'm very impressed! I know zero about knitting (crocheting?) etc. but this looks really good!!

    1. That's so awesome. I remember seeing that color combo a lot in the 90s. We also had a lot of hot pink...just in general. =)

  8. Is it too sad? People make fun of me for this, but I just cannot get involved with a book if I know from the beginning that it's going to be heartbreaking.

    1. Hmm...I don't know whether it will be heartbreaking yet. I still have hope! It definitely has a lot of sad parts, but it's not written in a devastating way. I sobbed over The Time Traveler's Wife, but haven't shed a tear in this one yet.

  12. Will have to add this one to my list while I'm adding Tess's! I relate to your appreciation....I feel the same way toward hot showers and warm beds for the same reason.

  13. As a child I had two flared trouser suits, one purple and the other yellow, and loved them both. Ah, the seventies.....

    Love your little case!

    1. Ha! This made me laugh out loud, because I do love that feeling of reading fast...hadn't thought of that. Makes sense that this would work well for multi-tasking mamas...I'll have to keep that in mind!

  15. I'm not going to say anything original, but, waah, the little case is soo adorable! Colors are nice, but cats are the ones who steal the show, haha. c:
I like unusual color combinations too, my favorite is pink + red, some people say it is tasteless, but it's totally not true!
